AYA MUTO - TWICE WATER

ISSUE NO. 7:

AS AN ODE TO THE SUMMER MONTHS, ISSUE NO. 7 PRESENTS NEW WORK BY ARTIST AYA MUTO. THIS SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS IS THE RESULT OF A RECENT CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP TO SOME PLACES NEW AND OLD TO HER.

THE TITLE TWICE WATER, REFERS TO THE DIRECTIONS A FRIEND GAVE FOR HOW TO WATER HER PLANTS. YOU WATER ONCE, MAYBE YOU WALK AROUND A BIT WHILE THE SOIL WETS AND SOFTENS, OPENING UP FOR A SECOND SOAK. THEN YOU WATER AGAIN.

THIS COLLECTION OF IMAGES WAS TAKEN ENTIRELY ON FILM, MAKING THE PHOTOGRAPHING EXPERIENCE LESS INSTANTANEOUS. THE TIMELINE THAT FILM DEMANDS FROM THE INITIAL CAPTURING OF THE IMAGE TO THE PROCESSING POINT GIVES A MOMENT OF RECALL, AN OPENING UP. HOW A PHOTOGRAPH TAKES AN EXPERIENCE OR A LONGER NARRATIVE AND THE REFLECTIONS THAT COME WITH IT. AND HOW YOU CAN REVISIT IT ONCE, TWICE OR MANIFOLD, SEEING IT DIFFERENTLY OR WITH IT SPEAKING THE SAME OVER TIME.

AYA’S STORY TALKS OF THE LIGHT, THE SKYLINES, THE SURVEY OF SHELTERS, NATURE INTERACTIONS, UNPEOPLED FIELDS, A STILL LIFE OF SHOES. THEY ARE PLACES AND THINGS A ROAD TRIP GIVES A SPECIAL CONTEXT AND WHAT A PHOTOGRAPH CAN MAKE ALL THE MORE POETIC. ENJOY THE TRAVEL.

AYA MUTO IS BASED IN LOS ANGELES AND CONTRIBUTES HER EDITORIAL WORK TO THE LIKES OF CASA BRUTUS, BRUTUS, AND FREUNDE VON FREUNDEN.
