ISSUE NO. 8:
This 8th issue of BLEACHED BLEACHED takes a step into the current project of a young design studio called Women. Women is Scott Barry and Neil Doshi, CalArts alumni and artists with work both far reaching and inventive.
Their current project is a five year experimental design studio, with multiple phases and geographies. This first year, entitled “Connections,” takes part in the High Desert of Southern California wherein they confront design from a very beginning point, looking at new models and forms for living, working and art. The work they produce for one year in each of the specific environments is determined by the context of those places, so the effect is well-rounded and the thought-process ongoing with different motivation and materials at each location change.
“Connections” (also referring to this pdf document) is a sort of clip of the larger experience, abstracted through loose story telling and dialogue, sound effects and image making. One can see the freedoms and confrontations they are experiencing in the geography, the problem solving of architecture and this reinvention of practice, which is emblematic of the project as a whole. What are the boundaries around the idea of practice? How does one redefine practice as a design studio in fluctuating conditions? How can practice be inclusive to integrate living, working and art making where there becomes little distinction between these categories?
Keep following the story and it will all become clear as this entire project progresses. Women is a studio showing how to make the entire experience their work through alternative and revelatory approaches.
